FDSN Network Information

FDSN code YS (2009-2013) Network name The life cycle of Andean volcanoes:Combining space-based and field studies (ANDIVOLC)
Start year 2009 Operated by
  • Cornell University, United States of America
End year 2013 Deployment region
Description

Over the 3-4years of this project, with South American collaborators, we
will make field visits to about 10 volcanoes of interest to constrain the
background levels of seismic activity to compare with the remotely
sensed data. We will deploy seismometers in 2 different modes:
reconnaissance mode and longer term monitoring. In the reconnaissance
mode lasting 4 weeks during each of the three years, a team of 3-6 will
redeploy the network (~10-15 intermediate & short period instruments)
every 4-5 days, visiting 5 volcanoes per year. While 4-5 days is a
short period of
time, typical background rates of seismicity at volcanoes are a few to
a few tens of microearthquakes per day. At the end of the reconnaissance
field season, we will deploy the seismometers at a volcano of interest
for the 11 months until we return to the field to retrieve the
instruments and start another field season.
