FDSN Network Information

FDSN code 1T (2015-2016) Network name RAPID: Observing the Disintegration of the Scar Inlet Ice Shelf (Scar Breakup RAPID)
Start year 2015 Operated by
  • University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF), United States of America
End year 2016 Deployment region
Description

This is a short deployment project intended to study the weakening and disintegration of the Scar Inlet Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. We will be measuring the state of the ice shelf and monitoring its movement on short timescales in anticipation for a possible disintegration event in February 2016. We request up to 3 temporary broad band seismometers, which we will deploy for <4 weeks at 200HZ. Although not part of this project, collaborating projects maintain and deploy the longer term seismic network in teh area that will help us analyze our short term data. Matt King, specifically, is leading a project to maintain a longer term seismic and GPS network in the area.
