FDSN Network Information

FDSN code 2L (2020-2022) Network name Wellington Wellbore Velocity change experiment (WELLVEL)
Start year 2020 Operated by
  • Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
End year 2022 Deployment region -
Description

We will deploy seismometers in the Wellington region next to selected water well bores that have changed levels (or not changed) in response to the Kaikoura earthquake.in 2016. We will use noise correlation approaches to determine how the seismic velocity responds to new earthquakes and to groundwater changes at the new stations, to try to determine the connection between the response of the ground and groundwater to earthquakes. We will keep them deployed for the two years of the project in order to have the best chance of recording earthquakes of significant size to see velocity changes. This project has been funded by the New Zealand Earthquake Commission, but no grant number has been given yet.
