Description |
We plan to make soundings both onshore and offshore in and around the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico. The offshore portion will come from Steve Constable at Scripps. The onshore portion we are requesting as the 12 LEMIs from IRIS. We will be looking for the extension of the break/suture between two volcanic arcs in southern Mexico and for the extension of the Tehuantepec ridge onshore. Offshore we will also explore the region around the Mw 8.2 Tehuantepec earthquake and look for evidence of slow slip, changes in coupling at the plate interface, and for possible fluid intrusions within the fault. In order to image the extensions of the offshore features the LEMIs will each be installed for 3 weeks at a time to be able to acquire deep soundings. 36 soundings in total will be required to image the region around the Gulf and the earthquake given the enormous size of the earthquake. This is the reason why we are requesting the equipment for 3 months. We are also taking into account shipping and customs times as well as potential delays due to the holidays at that time of year. It is the best time of year to do these measurements as it is the dry season and there will be no rain or hurricanes. |
