FDSN code 8V (2019-2019) Network name GEODES San Francisco Volcanic Field Active Seismic Experiment 2019 (GEODES-SFVF19)
Start year 2019 Operated by
  • University of Maryland
End year 2019 Deployment region -
Description

This project is designed to test field methodologies for geophysical deployments on planetary bodies. The main purpose is to image the shallow subsurface beneath terrestrial analog sites in the San Francisco Volcanic Field (SFVF), northern Arizona, using active source seismology through the GILA-MONSTER (predecessor of NASA SSERVI GEODES). The field site includes Black Point Lava Flow, Cinder Lake, Lava River Cave, and Merriam Quarry. The project builds upon previous exploration activities by NASA at SFVF, and the active source seismology will also be used to understand how similar investigations can be conducted on the Moon and Mars.
