Description |
We carried out a passive experiment operated with 40 broadband and short period seismic stations which were installed between July 2013 and May 2015 by a joint effort of the Instituto Andaluz de Geofísica, Granada University and GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences . The goal of this project is to study the crustal and upper mantle structures under the Easter Betic mountain ranges and the their variations between the different geological domains. The profile (TRANSCORBE), of 170 km length, starts near the coast in Mazarrón (Murcia) and follows a NW-SE direction, crossing the Alhama de Murcia fault and the Cazorla mountain range. It probes, from southeast to northwest, the Alboran domain (metamorphic rocks), the External zones (sedimentary rocks) and the Variscan terrains of the Iberian Massif. The spacing between stations is around 3-4 km. This inter-station distance allows us mapping with high accuracy the variations of the crust and upper mantle discontinuities in the Betic Range and their transition to the Iberian Massif. The proposed scientific work is the analysis of the data collected with the passive experiment which includes mainly P and S receiver functions calculation and analysis, velocity structure inversion and attenuation tomography. We will image the crust and lithospheric mantle structure in its relation with the geodynamic process associated with the Africa-Iberia oblique collision in the western Mediterranean. |
