FDSN code 9L (2019-2019) Network name 4-D investigation of the hydrological properties of playas of the Southern High Pains (Playa2)
Start year 2019 Operated by
  • Texas Tech University, United States of America
End year 2019 Deployment region
Description

We have repeated 2-D single data acquisition on a playa before and after rain. We found that we could track the movement of the water through the playa system. Vp/Vs ratios have been found to be a better diagnostic of soil moisture then P-wave velocities alone. We plan to return to the same playa (that has lost its ability to retain water) and also do a new project on a playa that is known to retain water to study the differences in their subsurface structure. Our plan it to do a 4 -D experiment in both playas using both P and S wave source and three component Fairfield nodes.. Our hope is to gain a better understanding of the different hydraulic properties of a ponding vs and non ponding playa. We plan deployments between October 17 and 24 2017. And to repeat measurements between November 21 and December 5 2019.
