FDSN Network Information

FDSN code BZ Network name ZIMBABWE SEISMIC NETWORK (BUL)
Start year 1959 Operated by
  • METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT,GOETZ OBSERVATORY (MSD), Zimbabwe
End year - Deployment region Zimbabwe
Description

Zimbabwe has been monitoring earthquakes since 1959 when the first seismic station was installed in Bulawayo. The need to establish a seismic network for monitoring seismic activity was brought about by the building and subsequent impounding of the Lake Kariba in 1958.The seismic phase data obtained from the local earthquake recorded by these analogue systems has since been used to perform seismic activity mapping, hypocentral location and magnitude determination of seismic events in Zimbabwe. The current seismological network is made up of four broadband stations: one at Bulawayo’s Goetz Observatory (BLWY), Karoi (KRI), Chipinge (CHIPN) and Matopos (MATP) which is an auxiliary station for International Monitoring System (IMS). .
