FDSN Network Information

FDSN code DL Network name DLR/ESA LUNA Facility Seismic Network
Start year 2023 Operated by
End year - Deployment region Germany
Description

DLR and ESA are jointly operating the LUNA analogue facility in Cologne, which provides a simulation lunar environment to test hardware, commanding, procedures and operations for future planetary, and especially lunar, missions as well as be used in astronaut training. LUNA consists of a 700 square-meter hall covered in at least 60 cm of regolith simulant. Geophysical missions are an important use case, and a permanent seismic station with a Trillium compact 120 s broad-band sensor is installed in LUNA to provide continuous reference information. In addition, data from temporary campaigns can be archived under this network code, if requested by users. The seismometer is installed in a box on the concrete floor of LUNA. Additionally, 500 m of fiber optic cable for DAS and DTS applications are installed across the hall below the regolith. DAS data are only obtained during specific campaigns and might also be archived under this network code.
