Description |
This is a continuation of research on the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. In 2015 and 2016, the University of Utah in collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso and Yellowstone National Park, installed dense arrays of Fairfield Nodal 3C short period nodes around the geyser basin. We would like to continue this work in 2017 and 2018 augmented by the PASSCAL nodes. The goal of this experiment is to image the shallow subsurface of the hydrothermal system using a combination of ambient noise tomography and active source tomography. The park service is interested in the shallow structure for their engineering/infrastructure needs and we would like to use this valuable dataset to better understand the dynamics of a undisturbed hydrothermal system. In particular, how surficial features are connected/related to other nearby features and how these features respond to environmental conditions. For comparison, in 2018, the instruments will be placed in the Norris Geyser Basin to see how different or how similar these different geyser basins behave. |
