FDSN Network Information

FDSN code YG (2011-2011) Network name Seismic Imaging of New Transitional Crust in the Salton Trough Oblique Rift (SSIP)
Start year 2011 Operated by
  • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), United States of America
End year 2011 Deployment region
Description

This project will investigate how transitional crust of continental margins is created by imaging active continental rifting processes (continental stretching, magmatism, and sedimentation) in the Salton Trough. The project will also contribute to earthquake hazards studies in southern California by imaging the structure of the southern San Andreas Fault and adjacent basins in the Salton Trough. We will collect several whole-crustal and upper-crustal seismic reflection and refraction lines, and record shots on all lines to obtain 3-D coverage.
