Description

I propose to set up a PASSCAL seismic array, coupled with MEMS acoustic recorders, at 4 different sites in the Jasper Ridge Biological Reserve, managed by Stanford University, in order to detect and monitor Earth [sub]surface processes (e.g. bioturbation, soil creep) continuously over a period of ~6 months (December 2020 - May 2021) to better understand soil and biotic processes via real time monitoring through seismic and acoustic signals. This experiment is complementary to our previous work in San Diego and San Francisco, using PASSCAL seismic arrays to track soil movement, but has the added benefit of leveraging acoustic recordings from small MEMS microphones surrounding the seismometers to better understand and capture these signals. We aim to use the ambient 'noise' captured by the seismometers, further guided by the acoustic recordings, to track and better understand soil movement, both biotic and abiotic, in a novel manner, potentially opening up a new avenue of interdisciplinary research that bridges geomorphology and biology via geophysical and acoustical techniques.
