| Site Description:PTCN is located atop a coastal cliff on the eastern edge of the tiny island of Pitcairn. the cliff side is densely vegetated with stunted palms which tend to grab the steady high winds which buffet the island. the vault is a 2 room structure built slightly into the hard rock of the cliff (about 2m x 5m), and overburdened with about 1 meter of earth. The instruments (STS-1) are located in the rear room on a cement pier. a de-humidifier is installed in the vault to reduce moisture. no Air conditioning (too expensive on power budget) is installed despite the high heat and humidity. the forward room houses the recording and power equipment. the solar panels are anchored to the roof of the building. the vault is located at the end of a dirt road which leads back towards town and a network of dirt roads which deliver travelers (mostly on 3-wheel ATVs and motorcycles) to various parts of the island. electrical power is provided by generators and supplemented with a small solar array. phone access is unavailable at this time, however, PTCN is being considered for Inmarsat access. | |
