Vault Conditions: The vault is a small wooden building completely covered with snow. It has a wood floor with a cutout in the center for the pier which consists of a number of 4 x 4 wood beams side by side in the snow. The seismometers are on triangular metal plates with 3 leveling screws each resting on the pier. The glacial snow at the South Pole moves an estimated 9 meters per year which requires releveling the seismometers at least once each week. As a result the site is quite noisy. Temperature in the vault is kept in the 40 degree range by means of an electric heater. Humidity is not a problem. | |
